Today while i was checking on some directories, i surprisingly found out that my website was listed on one of the direcotories which i never submitted to.

I have never hired any external agency for this work as I own a SEO company and have done all the directory submission myself.

I think this listing is unacceptable ! Is there any means of holding the directory owner responsible for this ?

Has this happened to anyone else ?

Is it quite possible that you have used directory submission service in past otherwise why anybody else submitted your website on behalf of you

I see this as a step to fill up the directory by the directory owner

Maybe you submitted to a different directory they own and they simply copied the data over?

It seems if someone owns one directory, they probably own two (or 50 - take your pick).

    Responsible for what, exactly?

    Get over yourself.

Stupid link policies - old site but it's still relevant

I regularly add sites manually to my directory and I have never received a complaint. In case it is in my directory (www.2yi.net) just pm me and I will remove it.

Don't you ever link naturally to sites? This is exactly what this is about, finding a site that you believe will be useful for your users and providing a link to it.

It is very much possible & why not.. No one needs a permission from the website owner to list a site in a directory. It is the owner of the directory who decides which is in & which is out.

To add to that there is a mod available for the phplink directory, using which you can add links from google to your directory.

    so it is possible.

Directories list sites all the time without consulting the owner. DMOZ and Yahoo have probably listed hundreds of thousands of sites without anyone ever submitting them. Do you think the site owner's should hold DMOZ and Yahoo responsible (not sure what you meant by this anyway)? How many personal web pages on the Internet have people's favorite web sites listed, you know.....things like Google, Digg, eBay, etc. Should these companies be pissed that millions have linked to them (gasp!) without their permission? Your listings in directories you never submitted will not hurt you in anyway, and possibly will help you.

I've had that happen to me a few times, you submit to one directory and then find your listing on an affiliate directory. Any listing is better than no listing so I really wouldn't worry about it, and as stated before anyone can submit a website to a directory.

    No worries mate

Thanks a lot for everyones views - guess i was a little too hyper about that -- aah long day's work and no sleep makes me cranky and funny i guess.

I will send a thank you mail to the directory as advised by Mopacfan !!

Maybe somebody else submitted your website and maybe even a full blown conspiracy of DP members out there with a team of trained monkeys submitting your website.

Have you considered the consequences of now going public...

It's possible that one of directories where you submitted your site spawned itself into a different directory (e.g., using the same mysql db).
    No big deal, I think.
