I thought the auction ended 11PM GMT, at which time I was the highest bidder?

lol would you actually bid against an MSN bidder? This auction has dodgy written all over it. Sorry Charlatan but you're not coming across as the most trust worthy person.

We're on GMT+1 in the UK (summertime) - I got a message from someone in the states at about 23:45 UK time with a bid. Although he hasn't got back to me yet so I may offer it out again later in the week.

Do you understand the concept of an auction Paul?

Weirfire - If I receive a private bid for a site that's publically up for sale I'm going to take it be it on this forum, MSN or from Mars. Now I'm sorry if you guys missed out on some deals. The transaction has been completed for the first site and the buyer is 100% happy. As for the second, there was a bid, before 11PM GMT and I accepted it. I posted on the forum well before 11PM GMT with the bid amount.

I won't be on this forum after today. I try and sell a couple of sites and get bombared with abuse just because people miss out on deals. Well I'm sorry you guys didn't fleece the newbie and get a good deal which is what all this is about.

I don't care about the deals. What I care about is when someone posts an auction on this forum that they keep their word on the conditions they set out at the start and all this taking bids from outside of the forum should have been set out from the beginning.

Am I the only 1 that thinks this?

You actually think we were trying to fleece you, hell man I even gave you advice that was against my best interests saying don't accept bids less than x,xxx the reason you are getting stick is because you start an auction saying it will complete at one time and then just ignore it. Taking bids outside the forum is fine provided you post them in the thread.

If you want I'll post our entire PM conversation just to prove how I was trying to "fleece" you.

Of course not dct, you know I appreciated your advice and still do...

The auction did end at 11PM GMT and I did try my best to post the bids I was receiving from e-mail and messenger contacts. Yet it seems this is wrong :-

"lol would you actually bid against an MSN bidder? This auction has dodgy written all over it. Sorry Charlatan but you're not coming across as the most trust worthy person."

What am I supposed to do? I receive a higher bid outside the forum, am I supposed to let it go and lose out?

Weirfire you must understand this is the first time I have sold a site, the first time I've used this forum and certainly the first time I've done some kind of auction on a forum. I am sorry that I don't know every single rule / procedure for listing a site.

I put the site up for sale. Then I was told to put it as an auction. Then I'm told I must declare I will be taking outside bids 20 posts down, then I'm told I can't do private deals, accept exchanges, I've been ripped off, I'm trying to rip people off. I've done the best I can here for my first sale guys, just give me a break.

dct - I really do appreciate your advice, I know you were not out to fleece me, at all, the comment was no way aimed at you, it's mainly aimed at all the other guys who've offered me $50 start up sites in return for mine.

geir - I'm not out to bid against you. I had genuine bids from MSN and E-Mail contacts. I was told to post them in the forum and I did, but it seems when I do this people think I'm trying to up the price. If I didn't want to let the site go for a certain price I would have posted a higher buy it now price or at least some kind of reserve. If the other guys back out I will honor your bid Geir, 100% if you still want it. The price is fine, it's not about that. I'm trying to do the right thing by you guys and my private bidders and not getting anywhere...

Weirfire - I've no idea who you actually are but if my selling of these sites has bothered you in any way I apologise.

I'm not out to cause trouble, it seems people have their own opinions what is the correct protocol for auctions on here. I've just followed what I've been told so far.

Anyway, I won't bother you guys anymore. Thanks for all your advice, particularly Scott and dct.

    Cheers.

Where a bid comes from is irrelevant IMHO. It is not uncommon on this forum for sellers to receive private bids on their auctions and to post these in the threads without naming the bidder.

I have no doubt that Charlatan was sincere in posting the privately received bids. I also believe that him being new to this forum made him make some questionable decisions, such as selling one of the sites privately before the stated end of auction.

Seem to me Charlatan is a nice guy who for various reasons got in over his head on this one...

It is just poorly executed. Hopefully your next auction is more organized.

Noone has mentioned the funniest part of this thread, his user name:

Lol...Might be a bad user name for someone looking to sell things ;)

    Paul,
I would not want you to leave the forum, and I hope you will stick around. As they say; what does not kill you makes you stronger...
I am sure you have learned a great deal from this process.
To me this is not about the price and whether it is high or low, but rather a question of integrity and standing behind your word.

Yesterday at 11:55 AM "forum time" you posted regarding the auction end time: "That's 11PM GMT, 3 hours from now :)"

At 2:59 PM "forum time" (that's 3 hours and 4 minutes later) I posted my bid for $160.

There were no further posts until 3:17 PM forum time, so I thought that I had won the auction until you posted a $200 private bid.

I am not in UK, so I honestly do not know when 11PM GMT was. Based on what you posted though, I thought that I had won the auction. Accepting additional bids after the fact would be highly unethical IMHO, if this is not what happened here I apologize...

yfs1 - Agreed on the name :) - I was listening to The Charlatans (band) at the time, ooops. I didn't join here with the intention to sell, it was more to buy so I didn't think about it too much.

Geir - Thanks for your kind comments. As for the time I had planned on ending at 11PM UK Time (which was about 3 hours away at the time of posting) as I forgot we were on GMT+1 with it being summer. I only realised this when 2 guys in the states who were messaging me regarding the domain said they were waiting for the auction to end "in just over an hour" - Seeming as I'd posted it'll end at 11PM GMT a couple of times and all bidders were overseas I decided to let it run for the additional hour longer than I'd planned. That's about the size of it, nothing out of hand intended, I just got a bit sloppy with my "3 hours from now" comment.

Setting a fixed time (in minutes level) for auctions may be not suitable for forums. The forum software isn't designed for auctions like ebay.

What is really hysterical to me about this thread is that I *thought* I had posted a bid of $700 for both sites.

I guess it didn't look enough like a bid!! LOL

Now looking back I see that it might have been read as an appraisal.

Oh well... water under the bridge I guess.

(DCT... I thought YOU had bid $700 and I meant to bid $750... LOL)
