I've had my eye on a domain which is now 5 days into "PendingDelete" status. I (through GoDaddy) registered for a backorder of the name. But since it was the first time I ever did it, I didn't realize they only attempt to register it every 12 hours. I could've done that myself for the next week or so. So here's my problem: If I see it first, myself, while trying to register it through another registry (Network Solutions for example) should I snag it? From what I understand of the system... if there are multiple people who WANT the domain, they enter a bidding process. But when I've bought domains before (I own many) once I registered it, it was removed from the zone, and no one could register (or "bid" for) it. I don't want to end up somehow bringing attention to my interest in the domain name... and I'm not sure if the "Public Backorder" means people can see that someone (Me) isd lying in wait for this domain. Any info would be helpful... thanks.
Backorder companies employ as many registrars as possible to boost their rate of success. Some even create "shell registrars" for the simple reason of pinging the Registry for the domain name once it's about to become available. There's one analogy I'd like to give. But I'm kinda ashamed since it has to do with...reproduction. Arguably the top 3 in this business are SnapNames, Club Drop, and Pool. Others like Go Daddy prefer to specialize on more specific things (like .us) since they can't possibly compete with the big guys. In Network Solutions' case, what you're probably referring to is their giving the registrant the option to opt-out of their backorder process. That's applicable to expired domain names they still hold, not those held in redemption period or pending delete by the Registry. Does these help or confuse you even more?
It is about an 80 day process from expiration to registeration. You placed a BO. The more attention of any sort including whois or typing in the name, that give to it now, the lower your chances of getting it. Just my opinion.
Is the name currently registered with Network Solutions, if so, then snapnames.com is the only option to get the domain, if there are likely to be several parties interested in the domain. They have an exclusive agreement with Network solutions, well they did the last time I tried them. You need to find out who the current registrar is and see if they have an exclusive drop partner.
Actually, the current registrar is a foreign one... in Europe (A non-english speaking country). Thanks for all the info.
My main original question hasn't been answered yet, really. Should I buy it myself (at another registrar) if I happen to see it available before it's "snagged" by GoDaddy's backorder process? Or will that just put me in a bidding war with myself? I assume that won't happen -- and it will just mean I can use that "credit" at GoDad for a future Domain Backorder?
That's what I figured -- so (and remember... I'm new at this, so this question may sound dumb) is there a specific time of the day all domains are released? And, also... are domains released on Sundays as well... or only during business hours M-F? And if there ARE hours when doms are released... in which time-zone should I be considering?
There is a range of time, about 4 hours. I can't recall if it is a specific day. I think it is. If you advanced search my username for posts and go back about 5-7 months you will find a thread that answers these questions. I may have posted part of the answer. Others provided information also, especially the time and day part. One of the threads that I have posted in contains a really good link to a detailed explanation of the entire process. Again, I caution you not to call attention to the actual domain. Shady people do review logs looking to make a quick buck.
buying from backorder domain name is not such an easy deal, I thought when I paid 19$ the name is officially mine
