A Blog - what does it really bring to a e-commerce site?

    Hi!

I am about to launch my site for selling concert and opera tickets in Vienna. I am thinking about starting a blog too, in order to promote my site. the blog will be providing curious facts about composers or musical events in vienna (Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and so on, there are plenty of them :)

My considerations are, that on this blog i can post every day, thus bringing fresh info ( and fresh info is a problem for my site, as once i have the program and the description of events and venues, there is not much new info to add or change)

Do you think a blog will help me rank better?

Yes it will help you. You need some good SEO though. It will help you rote traffic to your mainsite through it. Though you cannot update it much, its quite ok, you can rather spend that time on linkbuilding and others ways of promotion.
A blog will also help you connect better with your potential buyers.

A Blog can be HUGE to an commerce site.

For one thing, it provides more ways a potential buyer can find the product page.

I have a client that has an ecommerce store, and all of hte products he has have a tremendous story behind them, on how and why he decided to start selling them. I have them write up all of the stories, and put them in a blog, optimizing each article on the product name, and linking to the product page.

When it was all said and done, the product pages in his ecommerce store gets roughtly twice as much traffic from the blog as they do organically. And, for each product name SERP, they now have TWO results in the top 10, with the blog article in the top 3, and the product info page in the lower half of the page.

Blogs can bring you a lot of long tail traffic. Your main site only has so much content and it probably doesn't change as often as a blog. Users who come across your blog may browse around to your ecommerce site and bring you business.

Hey, your line of argument is perfect. Yes, that's exactly why you need the blog on your site, for fresh content. Good for search engines, and gives the buyers a reason to check back frequently.
