I want to do multiple installs and manage all the blogs, but its getting too tedious to do this 1 by 1 anymore. Does anyone have any tips?

Related Question: is there a site where you can demo the admin modules of WP mu? How appropriate is it really for one author with multiple blogs, as opposed to a simple blog host?

wordpresselite.com is a great solution if you want to make a ton of splogs :) and possibly even if you don't want to make a ton of splogs (I haven't tried it myself).

The drawback of wordpress mu is that (I believe, please correct me if I'm wrong) the different wp's all have to be on the same server. If you are truly making a large number of blogs, I don't think it's wise to have all the eggs in one basket like that.

I think the best solution is to use BlogMatrixPro fully automated blog system (Check my signature)
