I wish to purchase a domain from sombody. It is registered with Godaddy. (i don't know the domain, as it is for my colleuge and he asked me to buy the domain, but i know vague details about it)

I emailed them, and they are willing to sell it to me.

    What about price?
It was registered in 2004, but the domain/site is Not running at the moment

How do i work out how much this is worth?
it has no traffic, as the site is NOT LOADED.

It expires in April 2008, but he is willing to sell it to me.

How would i approach him about a price? What should i pay for it? a domain that isn't getting traffic, and is not uploaded?

i don't want to sound desprate, or he will raise the price.

    What offer should i make?

    Any tips/ advice? from Experience ? ?

+What are the NEXT LEGAL STAGES, after price has been decided?

PM the name to me and I can give you a price range.

    1. Just because it expires in 08 don't take that to mean that it will drop

    2. Many options for transferring the domain with both sides being comfortable.

I buy/sell 10-30 domains a week. I can check to see if the owner is a regular domainer that is used to completing transactions. Usually when I send out a cold email inquiring about a domain I don't discuss price until the owner tells me that they are open to the idea of selling. Typically my opening offer will be 50-60% of my ceiling. I'll raise my offer once to 70-80% of my max price and if that doesn't do it I'll give my final offer. If the owner has an unrealistic price point I'll just thank them for their time and move on. ( usually they'll come back in 1-2 months asking if you're still interested)

    hope this info helps.

I would think you had some idea of a price before you approached him. What is the domain worth to you? That is your ceiling price, always have that before you decide to buy anything. Ask the person what they want for the site and see what they offer you. Sometimes it is much lower than you were willing to give and it gives you an idea of how reasonable they are. Then like duceman said, offer 50% of what your ceiling price is. If you are willing to pay $500 for a domain offer $250 and work your way up.

Purchasing a domain is no different than buying anything else you have to work out the best deal and then purchase it but you have to know what you limit price is.

    Good Luck !

I have a Rough Maximum I am willing to pay for it..... $150.

    Do I email him and

1)offer him 50% of this(and work up if he says too low)
    Or
2)Should i ask him "How much do you want for the domain?"

Which one is a better approach, asking how much he wants? or telling him how much I wish to pay ? Why is it a better approach ?

which one works best for you?

Like allout mentioned, "Ask the person what they want ... "

I buy and sell domains daily and when "push come to shove" it's the current owner that sets the initial price. They may not say it out loud but they usually have a price in mind. With enough dialogue you'll eventually get a price. Domainers/speculators lose a lot of sales because they won't set a price. It sounds like you're dealing with an end user. Unless I have a very specific need I usually don't deal with "make an offer" people.

My approach would be something like,

    "Mr.Smith,

I appreciate your reply to my initial email regarding ?????.com Mr. Smith. Let me be clear that I am acting on behalf of a colleague of mine who is launching a new website and will be the end user of ???????.com

I have looked at several domain names that would fit his business model and ????.com is one of those. If you have a price in mind for your domain I'll know immediately if it fits within his budget. I would like to be able to say "money is no object", but, it is of concern. I'm hoping your asking price is something amenable to both you and my colleague.

    Regards, "

This is just my opinion of course :)
