which source is a reliable and respected appraisal service.?

some sites I put on leapfish were about right while other were way off.

    how does leapfish justify it..?

inbound links, dmoz, yahoo dir, .edu. etc ?

it is not just PR from my results.

If I have something appraised, I use Afternic/Buy Domains.
No one ever argues with their appraisals.
They may not have the funds, but I have never heard any negative feed back about that company.

Leap Fish is good for a laugh, but if you mention leapfish as a justification for price, the joke will be on you:)

I wouldn't pay money for an appraisal. None of the automated services can come close to explaining domain sales value.

Afterninc's appraisals are done by Human beings and they are the oldest and most respected company on the internet, and sell more domains per day than anyone.
If you don't have a domain that you are sure is worth over at least 1k, it's not worth the expense.

afternic is selling more domains per day than anyone? That sounds strange to me. As far I know Sedo was the market leader is selling domain names. Where did you get that information?

Also, just because a human appraises it doesn't make much difference. People's opinions vary wildly. I wouldn't pay a dime for an appraisal from afternic, sedo, anyone really. The real winners off appraisal business is the appraisers, not you ;) You get 1 chance to sell the domain name, you have to decide what is the right price based on your situation (how badly you need the money, how many multiples are you comfortable selling at if its a revenue name, future plans for it, etc). No appraisal service can doo all that, even for a seller it is hard.

Sedo is only 5 years old. This really would be a pointless argument, they both are respected in the industry.
Everyone has their preference that's all.
My only point was if you are going to get an appraisal, at least use a company that is recognized and respected. That was the point of the thread, "Who is respected and reliable.:

You state things as if they were facts (oldest, most respected, sell most names). I am not certain but I think Great Domains is/was older (bought out by sedo recently). Most respected is an opinion. and sells the most domain names/ who knows where that came from.

    Lukas,
dont waste your money on an appraisal. All the automated ones and even human evaluated ones look and rank your domain based on stuff like length, keyword some use dmoz/overture/google/etc. But really none of that is going to tell you what it's *really* worth. You are much better off looking at a site like http://www.dnsaleprice.com and http://www.dnjournal.com, see what names are selling for, what extensions, find similar sales. While similar domains doesn't determine your price it can give you ideas as to ranges (then again sales might be a great bargain or a huge mistake). If yuor keywords and domains are good finding some similar niche sales shouldnt be that difficult.

No I didn't! They are one of the oldest and most respected. Aren't they?
Like I said, everyone has a preference.
The question was "What is a reliable and respected source for appraisals to use?" and I gave the one that I use and have the most success with.

The highest selling domain last month was from Afternic, as well as many other sales. That is a fact. Look!

I thought "my opinion" was assumed since the poster was asking for opinions.
Sedo is also very respected. There is no argument here.
One is my opinion, the other is yours.
You really can't go wrong with either.

Yes, sometimes I may speak with "sales" in my tone, but I know from experience, that they sell a lot of domains, and many months , they do top the list. As does Moniker. Just read the reports, and go to the conferences.
    They are all good.
