What format would be best for creating subdirectory name?
Some people says how is better -,yet some other people how _ is better.
Right now i am not using none of it,simply full name(domain.com/johntravolta)but not sure is that good.

    Hi,

Using your example I would personally set it up as johntravolta.domain.com and I would avoid using more than a single word for the directory. This equates to the same as you have setup & actually follows the same path as domain.com/johntravolta... it just looks better in the url address and avoids the need for the forward slash. Hope this helps..

Personally i use hyphens for directory names and underscores for file names. What ever format you choose just make sure it is consistent throughout the site.

i dont like hypens on dir names. but i think you gotta good point though, may be its better for seo to use some sort of separation between words.

In my own experiences, using hypens to separate your keywords in url would be better because it is more visitor friendly basically. Such practices are also valued by search engines. :)

Dashes or hyphens has to be of choice as this is what matt cutt says on dashes vs underscore,

I also agree. I use Dashes or hyphens because I notice alot of the bigger sites do well with it.

I prefer hyphens to underscores... It gives better visibilty when used as a link... some-link is much better than some_link (as most people/forums will have an underline for anchors tags)....

Also good if the words are separated.. so that search engines find it easy to know what your page is about..... and makes it easy for the people to understand what is inside the page, directly from url.... it is not good if the visitor are not able to separate/understand the words in the url...

I use dashes instead of hyphens, because dashes makes clear visible without any doubt where else hyphens wont make clear visible in most cases, it looks like space. So i prefer dashes than hyphens.

Just remember that there should be no spaces, hyphens and dashes will work fine.
