I keep seeing these new sites for sale with around 1000 backlinks. These sites are only 1 or 2 months old. How are these webmasters getting this many links this quickly. This is google links, not msn or Yahoo.

Its easy if you throw enough cash at it.

Press releases, hire linkbuilders, directory submission, article submission.............

I'd avoid it personally, depending on the search terms that many links in such a short time is probably asking to get flagged by the search engines!

I always thought that too many links in a short space of time would get you sandboxed.

It's not taken as given, but I'd say that there would be a more than good chance of that happening.

I've noticed that when a fresh site gets lots of links (especcially from a few sites) those links appear in the link:www...... query for some time and then dissapear. They will then reappear in the search after some months (that's related to the google bombing thing)

Propably those guys know this behaviour, so they make sites to sell them as soon as possible (before the g vanish those links) but anyway it is obvious that those site wide links will no more exist after the site is sold. Right?
