I saw this article today and was actually headed over here to share it. Glad some others are catching this info. As an American I can get the iPhone for a reasonable price, but I was pretty sure that this would upset some of my Indian brethern a lot.

Of course that being said, I am also one of those folks that thinks the iPhone is a lousy device overall. The lack of business capabilities, and the fact that I can't feel anything on the screen maes it worthless for my needs. It sure does look pretty and have some neat apps though.

i am more than happy with my fully loaded Sony Ericsson P990i , it has all the features of iPhone + even more. even personally i also dont like iPhone much. its just another hype and will be slow down in coming days resulting in huge rate slash.

What is the need to smart price the iphone? Just to make it unaffordable for the common Indian?

dairyman, reading this thread more people will see that everything in goods costs way more in US - country of bargains actually.

As for $800 for iphone, in Ukraine it costs the same, but I saw unlocked from US for $250 or so:) So ?) you got it. Stop feeding this so-called businesmans, and soon this will stop. Most bad that some people even take credit for ...phone, lol

Well Indian goverment have some issue on Data realted with 3G process. After Maran's resign new ministery Balu ignore the 3G policy and not allowed to use. So without Goverment's permission, we can't use 3G.
