8-year-old Saudi girl divorces 50-year-old husband

CAIRO – An 8-year-old Saudi girl has divorced her middle-aged husband after her father forced her to marry him last year in exchange for about $13,000, her lawyer said Thursday. Saudi Arabia has come under increasing criticism at home and abroad for permitting child marriages. The United States, a close ally of the conservative Muslim kingdom, has called child marriage a "clear and unacceptable" violation of human rights.

The girl was allowed to divorce the 50-year-old man who she married in August after an out-of-court settlement had been reached in the case, said her lawyer, Abdulla al-Jeteli. The exact date of the divorce was not immediately known.

The court ruled that the marriage was legal and could not be voided by her or her mom, that her dad had the right to sell her. It was only because the "husband" settled and agreed to divorce that the girl is free. The Saudi government and courts did nothing to protect this child.

By the way, in what Western society does it happen that an 8-year old girl is marrying a 50-year old man ~ and it is condoned in court and by the government? In what Western society does the mother and the daughter have no rights to challenge the marriage because the are female?

It takes time for some societies to evolve even in the modern days. In particular, Saudi Arabia will be the last country in the Middle East to accept western values as opposed to other Gulf States.

I would give a couple of decades for Saudi Arabia to match the level of the US at around the 60s-70s.

Well, it is not a surprise, i consider this law doesn't fit at all. They should change into another one where children enjoy their childhood and later when it is the right time they will be able to decide about this mature and delicate topic.

 

Add to that that women should also be allowed to decide for themselves if they want to get married. It should not be decided for them, or a trade for goats.
