I don't agree from your first point - "Getting Linkbacks". It is not a rumor. I have seen results of back links in terms of PR and SERPs. Google and Yahoo both consider importance of back links for SERPs.
After the update of Google Farmer unique content matter more now, and backlinks always matter for SERPS.
Do follow Backlink from relevant content seems to be more effective and proves helpful to rank for the keyword.
