Hello Dp'ers! As the title says, i am hosting a writing contest which the grand prize is $75. For this contest you will need to write about Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both are so called the founding fathers of Early American Literature. In addition you must have read The Scarlet Letter and one of Poe's many short stories (a list will be added below). You will compare these two stories and should focus on a shared theme or conflict that connects the two. Poe short stories: The Raven The Pit and the Pendulum The Purloined Letter Tell-Tale Heart The Fall of the House of Usher Be sure to: - Use ideas from both The Scarlet Letter and the story you choose to establish a thesis about an important theme or conflict - User specific and relevant evidence from each story to develop your thesis - Show how each author uses specific literary elements (for example: theme, characterization, structure, point of view) or techniques (for example: symbolism, irony, figurative language) in relation to the theme or conflict you've chosen - Organize your ideas in a logical and coherent manner - User language that communicates ideas effectively - Follow the conventions of standard written English - 1 page, 12 point font, Times New Roman, single spaced. - Mimimum of 5 paragraphs Contest will be over November 30th which I will decide who the winner is.
