Have you tested different variations, ad placement, less ad blocks, better content, etc...? Constant testing is a must and with that kind of traffic you should have been able to test a lot of different elements.
traffic is ok. the CTR really needs to be optimized. have you tried playing around with the ads and placement? if you handle content yourself, you can try outsourcing them. you win some, you lose some.
A thousand hits a day is enough to put you into the $5-$15 range per day. Change up your content perhaps?
Not everyone is supposed to succeed with Adsense. You might want to try other things such as affiliate marketing etc.
It's a good start, most people in their first year of business don't make any money. Just keep at it and you'll be fine.
Lots of people here saying you need more traffic. From your number of impressions, I'd say you have more than enough traffic to be making good money on Adsense. Your CTR should be 5 to 10 time higher than it is. I have a fraction of the traffic that you have (and I mean a fraction) but my CTR is much higher. I have made approx $20 per month for the last few months, which still isn't great. I need traffic, you need better optimisation.
Write content rich articles for your site and your page impressions will improve and so will your ads.
$.05-$.06 EPC average. That's a low paying niche. You'll need a very significant increase in traffic and clicks to earn the good money. Good luck.
