7 units are not allowed, if I'm not mistaken, Google allows only 3, but like you I too have seen many people using 5-10 units on their websites. Don't know how they are getting by it.

You guys are wrong. Google AdSense TOS says no more than 3 ads can be displayed at a time. The ad units can be displayed as long as no more than 3 "Google Ads" are displayed.

Some of the larger sites, such as this one, and ezinearticles.com and other must have a special agreement with Google because I have noticed the same thing. Many large sites have more than 3 ad units placed on their sites. And I know for a fact that ezinearticles.com is ALL "Google Ads". You can check any of their articles to see this. Its not something that a smaller publisher can do however.

Yes if you get millions of clicks adsense program opens up to you... you can edit the way the ads display, remove ads by google etc etc... you will also find bidders will request to be listed on this site and pay more for the listing... another example is the "how stuff works" website... if i could add a link i would... but they edit the google ads to get rid of the google ads link... and make them look more inline with there website

either way it looks terrible... you would think they would put better thought into the ads... the other way they could be doing it is possibly through frames? I don't know i've never bothered with anymore than 3....and i gave up on frame websites when i first started website building as every book said not to get into them.... so never really bothered to learn lmao....... I know you can't physcially display more than 3 as google prevents anymore showing up...

Unless you have a special arrangement with google, there is no way possible to get more than 3 ad units on your website. Many programers have tried in vain to find a way around it but failed. But then, there are always exceptions to every rule.

The page is totally messed and I hate such sites. But, anyway to the point. The large publisher have always done special agreements with Google Adsense so they won't face any problems.

The page would be less attractive for the visitors and your total revenue will decrease.

More than 3 ad units on a page can be possible if you're using more than one publisher id

That is not recommendable and will never do.
Focus on 3 ads only and experiment by altering
    their placements, sizes and colors.

    Good luck ;)

Be careful, too many ads = risk. I mean be sure you don't get invalid clicks, and as far as I know, google policy says that the maximum allowed ads in one page is 3 !
