The number one question (other than what's the URL) seems to be why am I selling this site?

Basically, it's always been an additional revenue stream for me but not something I had time to invest in or cared enough to make time for. And while I'm not opposed at all to keeping it and collecting the payment checks each month, I have other projects on the table that I do care about, and selling this would create some additional disposable cash for me that I could pour into those.

    Thanks again,
    Scott

roadies, I'm looking at offers and willing to negotiate.

As a guide, and in reply to a question I received on why I gave the yearly average monthly income figures in my original post:

This is a retail operation, and like any retail store (online or not) it has busier and slower periods. If I had just listed the average income for the last 6 months that wouldn't be fair to a buyer because they include the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Those are both big for this site and the monthly average number would have been much higher.

By using the yearly numbers, it gives a more complete and fair assessment of how the site has performed overall for the past 2 full years. I certainly want the best deal I can get as a seller, but I won't skew the numbers to cheat anyone. By giving the full earnings for the past 2 years I hope I've displayed that.

Are all the payments for processed by the drop shipper or do you have your own merchant account? Also, how is the commission paid?

I am based in the U.K and wondering if your site could be operated without a presence in the U.S.

asimj, it's set up for the supplier to handle payment transactions. It can be set up for you to handle them and then process orders with the supplier, however that requires investing time into each individual order. I'm sure that would be better, to prevent sending customers to another site at checkout, but I've never had the time or motivation to make that investment in this site myself.

Also, it would require a little knowledge of PHP and XML to convert the inventory feeds into your own shopping cart and checkout system.

Being in the U.K. shouldn't be a problem, but I will check with the supplier and let you know for sure.

On a side note, the DP member I mentioned in my first post who also supplies this industry claims to have that type of system ready to go should the buyer decide to work with him. I haven't looked at it very closely, but I know his sites and don't doubt his word on it.

Is the site script custom built or off the shelf?

How often is the database of products updated and how much site maintenance is required?

asimj, the supplier provides a basic script and layout, what I have has been highly customized and redesigned from that over the years.

I haven't invested much time into this site as I've stated, but I come from a retail (offline) background, so made changes and additions to the site that I felt were best for cross-merchandising and suggestive selling to visitors. Basically, tweaks I felt would help convert browsers into buyers based on my retail experience.

The inventory is almost constantly updated. Each category of products has it's own datafeed, the script that runs the site pulls that from the supplier and caches it for a set period on my site. When that period expires it pulls the feed again. The actual feed pulls are triggered (I believe) by a visitor browsing the category once the cache has expired, so I can't give a more specific timing.

I suppose you could even create a cron job to update them without the customer triggering it too, I hadn't thought about doing that until just now, but there doesn't seem to be any real performance hit from the way it works now so I don't know if that's really necessary anyway.

As for site maintenance, that'd be up to the buyer. I have a PSD file for the main landing page so that the seasonal image in the center can be changed easily. Beyond that, I do nothing with the site at all--other than to forward customer emails whenever one comes in to the supplier.

Personally, just because the site runs basically on its own I wouldn't suggest a buyer be as neglecting to it as I've always been. With a little more time and smart promotions I think this site would do much better than it has for me and would advise any buyer to invest a little time each month for that. Please note, I'm not promising the site will do better, I'm saying what I believe and what makes practical sense, the more you put in the more you'll get out with any site.
