5mbit vs 100mbit connection, help?

Hey.

I have not tried any other servers beside 100mbit ones.

Well now someone is offering me a server with 5mbit line..

So lets say i want to offer a download file which is about 100mb, and say 200 people are downloading it at the same time. Would every person that is downloading reach their max internet speed on the 5mbit line?

Or can you tell me how fast is 5mbit line in comparison to 100mbit?

Quite easy to work out really.

5mbit lines usually come with unmetered bandwidth plans while 100mbit plans have actual figures. If you think about it, you can only push a certain amount of bandwidth through a 5mbit line anyway.

If you have many users downloading from your site, the 100mbit line would be optimal as you can have 20 times more people running at the same speed they would at 5mbit.

 

So you mean 5mbit line is a good choice?

I would want to offer FULL speeds to the users..

 

5mbit/sec is 625kbs...split between 200 users...no it won't be fast at all...

if you are looking for speed for multiple users you need the 100mbit...

ask the host offering the 5mbit if they have a burstable line...(i.e...at times you can go above 5mbit if you get a traffic spike)...but by the way you are sounding you need this constantly and it won't just be a burst every now and then...

 

If it's a static website go for the 5mbit line, if you will be offering downloads go for the 100mbit line.
