So if like $20 of my Adsense income came from this site, but I removed the ads, will they not pay me? I am at $40 since I got started about 3 months ago, I was running a tech blog, but lost interest, I am not big on writing long articles.

From what I see in the forums, most account terminations occur around the $90 mark. As long as you get the ads off the site before any Google human reviews it, you should be ok.

Won't they review where the income came from though?

I don't think anyone can say for certain when/how Google reviews sites with Adsense on it. But with terminations so common around payment time, it seems like that is when they do the review. As long as Adsense is no longer on the site when they do the review, I don't think it will matter much. The site contents could have changed from when you earned Adsense revenue with it. :)
