    greetings
submitting to directorys and noticed a site with a 500 minimum character description.

I never encountered this before, mof, I thought the limit on 'descriptions' was 100 including spaces.

it's hard to come up with 500 characters (less of-to-the) and not seem like spamming

I have submitted few directories that required minimum 500 before. It took me some time to write the description. It's not hard though. But it's more than a description I think. It could be like a small article to those who are not used to write that length of description.

Well, some prefer lengthy descriptions...what can you do?

There's no standard length, especially when the script is custom or easily configurable. Asking for a long description is something that a few directories are rolling out in order to prevent spam. I know Jim Westergren introduced it at AddUrlFree, it would be interesting to learn how that turned out.

The thinking is that most spammers can't be bothered to go the extra mile and write a long description, when only a handful of directory listings ask for this. Just like they can't be bothered to go the extra mile and fill in a captcha.
