no offense taken jokomamamita. :) but there's a difference between using a favorite font again and again and accidentally submitting the same font as another designer, and intentionally copying the font of another entry because the CH said he/she liked it. one is an accident, one is plagiarism.

l3fty - Plaigiarism is the act of copying someone's written words, but not the font they used. In the design world as we all know, copying is frowned upon, but there are limited fonts out there to suit all styles, and unless you specifically designed the font for your own use, you can claim no such act of copyright violation or plagiarism. It would be like a writer of science fiction using the same font as another writer of the same genre. Is he copying, or did they all choose to use Times New Roman, or Ariel font?

If we are told that we cannot in anyway use the font you used, even if we adapt it to our needs, and it's a free font that we may use in general anyway, then that puts all of us at a complete disadvantage, as you would therefore be the immediate winner, either that or we must now search the net for similar fonts, which you may then class as copying, but who is to say that they are necessarily the same font or just very similar?

Most free fonts are for commercial use unless stated in the documents that come with the download. There is no copyright violation in using them, and so everyone is free to do so legally, but i'll leave the decision of whether it's moral to do so, to the designers themselves.

Good luck with the contest guys :)

    aderain,

do you mean to tell me it wouldn't bother you at all to enter a design using the exact same font, now that the CH has said the client likes it?

That's not the case at all, i'm just clarifying the position for others. Hence why i mentioned the moralistic argument. I couldn't do it, but the spirit of competition is such that if people want a serious chance of winning, they need to know that there is nothing legally stopping them from doing so, but morally and professionally, it would be seriously frowned upon, likely by the CH, and other designers.

There is no issue of plagiarism here, and the use of that term makes it a legal argument, which could put others off from even trying to use a similar font.

If you think i'm attacking you personally, then i apologise, as that is not the case, i was just trying to mediate between yours and jokomamamita's positions on this matter.

    aderain,

no need to apologize, we're just talkin :D

i think we just need to agree to disagree. you and jokomammita don't seem to consider copying another's font idea as plagiarism, but i do. for me, copying another person's ideas in order to win a contest is unethical, whether you copy graphics, fonts, layouts, colors, whatever.

I dont think there is anything wrong with using a similar font if that is what the CH likes

All the fonts are similar, they are either script fonts, or Sans Serif fonts. Now if one
person was using the exact same font because the CH said he liked it to another
designer- that raises copy issues (and desperation to win) based on the feedback on
    a CH.

I know, as do a lot of others, that we've all had other designers read what the CH has
stated about our design- giving feedback on what they liked about it and what they
wanted to see come from it- only to have another "designer" take that feedback and
create their design strictly based on what the CH stated about our design.

I've lost many contest because of these tactics from "designers" just looking to get a quick buck and "easy money" on the forums. It's not original - it's copying us.

I agree completely TightWad, and as stated before, it's not something i would do. I just wanted to clarify the point that some people will, and can do that, because they lack the professionalism that many designers share. I didn't expect this to turn into a grand debate on the matter, or have people feel that I don't respect people's originality. Sometimes I should really keep my fingers away from the keyboard :p

    Anyway, on with the contest.
