Contest $50 black and white line art website logo contest - finishes Tuesday morning

I'm afraid there isn't too much artistic freedom on this project as I think I have a definite idea what I want :(

I'm looking for a logo - a black and white line art image of a milk carton with two wifi rabbit ears. In the future everything will be wifi enabled - even milk cartons! :)

I've included images below with some comments for some insight into what I'm looking for.

What's particularly important is that the logo looks good at a number of specific sizes:
    1. Midsize - 500px tall.
    2. Small - 70px tall, e.g. for use in Bootstrap jumbotron.
    3. Smaller - 38px tall, e.g. for use as the brand image in a Bootstrap navbar.
    4. Tiny - 16px tall, for use as the classic old-school favicon.
The images don't have to be identical for each size, i.e. not just scaled versions of each other.

Particularly the favicon - with 16px there's not much room to work with! Maybe an upside down 'Y' on top of a square, i.e. the milk carton side on, or simply two rabbit ears would work? It's up to you.

In some situations the images will be used against a black background and in others a white one.

This logo will only be used on a website - so no need to provide stationary mockups etc.

For a bonus $20 also make a "secure" version - it's up to you how you interpret "secure", e.g. add a padlock image (like you see for a https site) to the milk carton or add a safe/vault door or a combination lock - whatever you like.

This is completely optional - not bothering with this aspect will not affect winning the primary $50. I may even chose to award the $50 to one person and the $20 to another if I like their "secure" idea best but prefer someone else's overall submission.

I never see any legalese on these competitions. But in short - I want exclusive rights to the winning image. If I award the $50 to one person and the $20 to another then I reserve the right to incorporate the "secure" idea into the other logo. If I've misunderstood how things work here please correct me.

Ideally I would like the images as SVG files (the favicon can be a bitmap).

Payment will be in USD by PayPal. There is guaranteed to be a winner. Closing date is Tuesday 3rd February at 12:00 GMT.

OK here are the images I mentioned above:
    1. color-carton - this is what I mean when I say "milk carton" - but I don't want any plastic cap.
    2. line-art-carton - this is almost exactly what I want, but without any logo etc., i.e. no "milk" text and no gray rectangle just white space on the sides (see my second thoughts on this below). I want a softer look though - in particular the thin lines are too thin and hard compared to the over-fat outer lines and meet at too "sharp" a point. Actually I prefer the angle/perspective of the color carton and the direction that it's facing, i.e. to the left.
    3. rabbit-ears - this is what I mean by "wifi rabbit ears", i.e. the antennae on your average wifi router. Being fat at the base, like these ones, isn't something I'm looking for and I just want two coming out of the carton.
    4. rough-draft - my 10 second shot at combining rabbit ears and carton. Looking at this I think "hmm... those rabbit ears look like black chopsticks or a pliers jammed into the back of the carton" - hopefully you can do better at making it clear they're antennae. Second I go "wow - with no logo at all, it isn't super clear it's definitely a milk cartoon." So maybe the text "Milk" rather than completely plain is required - it's up to you.
    5. Finally I've included an image showing the favicon and the small and large Bootstrap navbar brand images for a company called Electric Imp - just as an example of some of the image sizes mentioned above from a company whose image branding I like.

Thanks for the first submissions :)

For me how the thing looks at a number of particular fixed sizes is important. So here's a suggested submission format:

    submission-sizes-a.png submission-sizes-b.png

Size 3, i.e. 38px tall (for use in a Bootstrap navbar) is the most important size - as it will appear at the top of every page of the site.

As I noted this logo is only for use on a website - so there's no need to provide mock-ups of how it looks on sheets of textured paper etc.

I shouldn't have been so restrictive in my original requirements - you guys are the graphic artists. So it's up to you whether to go with one or two antennae, or whether to leave the carton sides blank or include e.g. "Milk".

I would like a favicon - but I won't make including this size make-or-break. Drawing something nice in a 16x16 pixel square is quite a particular skill.

Instead of two antennas coming out of the milk carton.......i have shown a single one on the surface.
And the keyhole for security aspect of the logo. Thanks.

I've also created a version with "MILK" on it, but i figured that in small sizes it is not visible. 1.jpg

Some cool looking images coming in - thanks :)

One thing though - it's clear that something that works at 500px doesn't necessarily work if simply scaled to 38px. E.g see this series:

    scaling.png
At 210px the lines look nice and thick and pixelation isn't too obvious, at 140px it's still OK-ish. At 70px the lines have become so thin relative to the size of the pixels that the pixelation becomes very obvious. And at 38px the pixelation looks terrible (and it's no longer very clear what one's even looking at).

So a different image may be needed at 38px - one where the line thicknesses and angles are chosen to minimize the aliasing issues.

Maybe the carton with wifi rabbit ears simply doesn't work at 38px. Maybe drop the ears and just show the emanating radio waves - the "beams". Or if you have a better idea for conveying the idea of "every day objects that have been around forever - with wifi added" then go for it :)

This contest will be won on the basis of the best 38px and 70px tall images (38px is most important, 70px second, 500px much less important and the favicon is least important). I know that 38px and 70px are really hard sizes to work at - but I guess that's a skill needed by those producing web-targeted logos.

Thanks for all the submissions. They're great :) Here is my feedback for the first day.

First - I've decided at the small sizes (38px and 70px tall) the rabbit ears take up space and don't look great - I prefer just the beams/waves without the antennae (like Pehulz did).

Five people made submissions - read all my comments for clues as to what I like and don't like :)

    1. Skaritza - currently I like this carton best, the line thicknesses etc. are right, such that even at the 38px size it doesn't look too aliased/jagged. Like the lock too :)
    skaritza.png
    2. Pehulz - like I said, I like the beams/waves coming straight out of the carton. I prefer the carton without any dark panels though. I like the three waves for the 70px image, but the three beams look blurry/crowded at 38px so I prefer your two beam image at this smaller size.
    pehulz.png
    3. Gibblet - thanks for being original and doing something different. The main problem I have with this is that it looks too "passive" - i.e. you don't get the feel of the carton actively beaming out data - rather it looks like a carton with an image of an antennae printed on its side.
    gibblet.png
    4. Appleiinc - like Pehulz you tried the idea of getting rid of the antennae. Cool :) And I like that you've used heavier lines the second time. But maybe try just one group of beams coming out of the carton (like Pehulz has) at either of the points I've marked with a red dot? Also the second time you drew the 70px image it got bigger - it's now well over 70px tall :(
    appleiinc.png
    5. Krishmk - I do like this for being alternative, the perspective and widths are distinctly different from the others - and I like the beams/waves. Could you remove the antennae and just move the beams in nearer to the points where the antennae currently come out of the carton?
    krishmk.png

Skaritza and Pehulz used a plain white background and most people went for pure black (rather than gray) for the lines - this is the format I prefer, i.e. black on a white background.

So thanks everyone - I look forward to seeing how things go from here :)

    /George
