Forums are a great way to increase your profile, and you can learn a lot if you are an active participant, or even just a lurker who actually reads threads properly If you just show up and spam to get your signature out there, then sure, you'll get a few incoming links, but you'll be losing out on a lot of valuable information.
A great post....I think there's going to be another explosion of forums...much like the explosion of blogs out there. Definitely one of the best ways to market your company...directly to your consumers visiting a forum they're interested in. You already have their attention so you've gotten over one of the biggest hurdles in marketing.
I always used to use the site I now own to get quality visitors to my forum (Footer in link if anyone's interested). I noticed visitors would land, but disappear after 30 seconds as there were very few posts in the forum itself. The trickiest part was definitely starting the forum. Once I got some quality, natural posters in there, with organic traffic, the forum carried itself and the members kept each-other in line.
