Say I want to have 5 sites come up to the top of Google in a similar niche... but not duplicate content sites. Should I put all 5 sites on different servers? If they are on the same server with same IP.... can they all get penalized if one does? Also, there is a company that has about 50 websites that come up #1 for Boston Apartments, and has a website for each neighborhood in Boston that comes up #1 for each keyword, such as "Back Bay Apartments" They are: #1) BostonPads.com (#3 for Boston Apartments) #2) BackBayPads.com (#1 for Back Bay Apartments) #3) SouthEndPads.com (#1 for South End Apartments) #4) SouthBostonApartments.com (#1 for South Boston Apartments) #5) CambridgePads.com (#1 for Cambridge Apartments) #6) BrooklinePads.com (#1 for Brookline Apartments #7) AllstonPads.com (#1 for Allston Apartments) #8) SomervillePads.com (#1 for Somerville Apartments) #9) FenwayPads.com (#1 for Fenway Apartments) #10) NewtonPads.com (#1 for Newton Apartments) and about 40+ others Can anyone tell if all of these sites are on the same server? I checked, and all are registered by the same person....and are similar layouts (Also they all Cross-Link to eachother with juicy anchor text.... is that possible to get penalized for that, since its all the same owner?)
Just 5 ?? there may be many site on same IP same niche Same script. Google has nothing to do unless theres same content !! and found faulty for Do follow link sell
There is nothing wrong having even hundreds of domain names running from the same server account and in fact most of the websites nowadays are enjoying the limitless domain hosting packages with no problems. The real problem is not in the way of hosting sites but through some artificial link building methods some are using. For example, if the 50 websites hosted on one server begin interlinking with each other, that would be terrible in the eyes of Google and the other engines and the rankings of all could drop in one day.
If you are using a shared hosting, there would be many sites already sharing the same IP address. Just take care that you don't interlink your sites and you'd have no problems.
Sites hosted on separate C class IP addresses allow webmasters to create a fleet of websites that interlink without being red-flagged. If however, the sites are hosted on the same IP address, and if you create multiple sites that have similar keyword structures and link to each other, Google spiders will certainly become suspicious.
OT1282, Are they all private reg's? If they are all in your name it sort kills anything else you do to hide them. Same ads codes on all of them? Same nameservers? In reference to the Boston apartment sites, what is the harm if they have have 50 different sites that cater to the 50 different neighborhoods around Boston? If they had 50 sites that all focused on South End rentals then that might be an issue. I can't see a harm linking them with no follow tags (others might see an issue with it). If you look at it from your viewers point of view it is a focused rental site that has links to other focused rental sites in the area. In the end you need to provide your readers with what they are looking for while keeping google happy.
I see no issue with a few sites on the same IP as long as they do NOT link to each other. I personally use different IPs for sites in my network that are of similar niche.
there should be no problem hosting 5 sites on the same server but if they are on the same niche, don't expect to get on top with each of them
Shouldnt be a problem, and those sites you listed are on different servers (well at least the first two are). However they're on shared hosts.
Why shouldn't you interlink? IMO if there are any sites that should be interlinked it is sites that are your own.
It is not a problem at all. Since they are not duplicate content, search engines have nothing to do with it
So it's bad to have the same content on the same server, but different domains? Why is this? I currently have about 10 sites for different cities and the only thing different about them is the city names. What am I at risk of? How much do I need to change the content to avoid problems? Is using the same layout ok if I change the readable text? Why is this even bad?
This is actually a SEO myth that has been refuted a long time ago: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/myth-busting-virtual-hosts-vs-dedicated-ip-addresses/
