    LHC First Beam - 10th September 2008 - 9am CEST (GMT+2)

That's 5 hours to wait for the First Large Hadron Collider Beam. Could this be the extinction of mankind or an $8 Billion of wasted experiment?

I'll cya guys in a few hours when the world hasn't ended :)

Do you really think they would turn it on if it were going to cause the world to end? No. They do it in a controlled environment, so if something goes wrong they can easily stop it from causing any damage. If they succeed it'll be a breakthrough in modern science.

It's amazing how quickly superstition crops up over scientific projects like the LHC that may be a scientific breakthrough in our understanding of the universe.

I hate that there are practically a million threads on this same subject. So the Large Hadron Collider will already have started its first test run by the time I finish typing this message, so obviously if you are reading this you are not dead. If a strangelet or black hole are created by LHC they still don't pose much of a risk as they aren't likely to exist for more than a millisecond.

Relax, they are not colliding particles today, just firing a beam. The real end of the world will be in about 6 - 8 weeks, no date has been set.

I think some of you guys have taken Dan Brown's 'Angels and Demons' way too seriously. Blackholes created by these beams are not big enough to do any large scale damage. So, chill.

I thought you were going to ask what you would do if you knew you had only 5 hours to live.
