I think Pagerank is an important part of Google system of ranking websites, so it will not be removed/ignored so easily. Secondly in past 5 months Google updated the internal Pageranks of different websites but there was no effect on home page PR (I think it was a minor update), so Google is updating the PR. Now lets see when Google will update the home page PR.

IMO, Google just wants people forget PR step by step because it doesn't have any value any more.

We just need an indicator, if PR gone, is there any other alternative? I do not think answer is yes.

Personally there are more factors that I prefer. Mozrank for example.

I check it using a lot of factors not just PR. You have to check the backlinks domains age, authority, what kind of backlinks it has, IP address, content of the site and a lot more factors. I would say, PR is just 1 factor out of many and sometimes PR does not even count.

    Cheers

PR is of zero importance. What matters is backlinks and the quality of backlinks. I'm sure Google will eliminate pageranks altogether very soon. peace!

I don't think Google is even considering banishing the Toolbar Pagerank. It is a factor used for rankings and i see no reason why it should be discontinued.
A video by Matt Cutts that came up on Youtube just 2 days back can surely confirm what i have to say :

Mozrank is a great way to check the quality/quantity of links pointing to a page. Mozrank itself isn't new (although the Open Site Explorer tool is fairly new). The thing that Mozrank won't tell you is if a site has been penalised by Google. This is why it's good to use Toolbar PR and Mozrank in combination. High Mozrank + low PR is definitely something to be wary of, although since PR hasn't been updated for some time it has been difficult to make those judgements.

As others have said, it may not be the case that Google has killed off toolbar PR completely. I guess we'll have to wait and see if there's another update sometime next month.

not really! not anymore that is. there was time when high PR meant higher ranking but today, PR is a very small factor in google's ranking algorithm and will hardly impact your ranking. you will see it often that a PR0 site outranking a PR3 or even PR4 site.

Exactly. And Google does encourage webamsters to work aggressively - but fairly - on their SEO campaigns. They support inbound link building, and they tell us when to use nofollow, and they have given us guidelines for onsite SEO. PR is the one tool that google has given us to help measure of success - or lack thereof.

Haha, I just noticed it today that there was no PR update in absolutely ages, but it's not 5 months, I'd say 2 maximum, still, a very long time!
