hahaha, Very true! Watch how quickly your hours exceed your 'normal' work hours though...you're at home the whole time...but it's easy to put in way more than 40 hours a week.
One of my mistakes first starting out was wasting too much money buying products that promised me a fortune but not delivering results. Another mistake newbies make is NOT finding a reliable mentor to guide them in the sometimes hectic world of internet marketing.
Good list. I think I would add Consistency. Most newbies do a little of this and a little of that, but don't do anything with any consistency. I'd say choose a handful of marketing techniques and then consistently do them everyday.
That's a great point. I think, as well, the new marketers may need to put themselves out on a limb asking for help from a community.
Doing your research is the most crucial and understanding marketing and advertising is what most newbies will eventually fail at.
These are all very good tips. Unfortunately I fell for a lot of those mistakes when I first started. I didn't even know the importance of having a good domain name at the time. The very first domain name I ever had was long and hard to remember.
1) Don't make a website that you yourself wouldn't want to hang out and visit. 2) Don't make one of those Marketing websites (the kind of mistake the topic starter made when he made that awful website with the flash and the angry British guy) 3) Track your stats.
The most important thing is Don't give up too soon. Let me share my experience: I almost give up at least 3 times. When this happend, I lay on bed in the mid night and ask my self: "Why I need to work too hard to earn just a few bucks? Why don't just give up and enjoy life -> doing other hobby?" Yes, I almost give up 3 times, finally I came out with new idea after a few restless nights and it makes money --> so now I am still in this industry. ==> Don't give up so early. Work until you bankcrupt because of domain name and hosting renewal bills. At least you should try all the technics you know. Until then don't give up.
Don't think you're cleverer than google/digg/stumbleupon etc etc and go against their ToS then come running to DP boohooing about being banned.
I will always call my self a newbie even after 100 years of experience. Because it creates more learning sessions everyday.....
hi! yes i agree i am going through this now for the last few month i was about to quit but i said no i have the filling it will work i am trying ppc and seo can you add some tips on how to keep going in the good direction thanks so much!
Great list, giving up and not following through is the most important. I often think of how ı could have given up so early on, now I'm so glad I didnt
well, no wonder, the internet is full of so much information about marketing trends and techniques. and some of them contradict...
-- Doing it only for the money You need to have a passion and a greater cause for starting an online business. If you focus only on making money there will be nothing to keep you going when it gets difficult or you're not seeing the results you expect. You should be proud of and believe in the value of what you are offering. Focus on helping people and providing value and you will be rewarded in time (you must also be patient and persistent). Scott
