5 Fatal Mistakes For A Newbie!

I'm starting anew thread to discuss the five most fatal mistakes a newbie marketer can make that will stunt their business growth. I'd like you all to think outside the box on this one. These can be technical, financial, emotional, mental, spiritual, professional, etc., you get the point.

I'll list mine, then you list yours...

These are by no means in any order of significance, just my five fatal mistakes

1.) Spending money on advertising before you know how
2.) Not believing it's possible to make a decent income online (this one will happen to most eventually)
3.) Trying to do everything you've been pitched
4.) Getting into a niche you don't know well
5.) Giving up too soon

Ok, its a start, but I think it'll provide some great reading material for new marketers. If you have any specific questions please post them in this thread. It's not just for people how have lists of mistakes, but an source of information and networking to help you get your start!

6. Not finishing up what you started, because you read about another marketing idea.

 

7. Thinking that getting indexed in Google will magically cause gobs of traffic to come to your site.

 

8. Not critiquing their first landing pages enough.

 

5.) Giving up too soon . This is most probably mistake they might make .
I am not very familar with earning online, so I will stick on and on till I can make a living online .

 

Trying to do too many things at once at first and then not following through and completing the tasks.

 

I am totally amazed nobody added this one:

* Inaction by the business owner or marketing team.

In other words like delaying in giving the marketing team money to get banners or whatever because recieveables havent come in yet.

Another is having a person (or a team) to do marketing on a shoestring budget and expecting too much. Or worse still having no marketing budget at all (yes that still happens!)

Or the worse of them all:
Building a website, then sitting back believing the world will come running to look and sign up at your website (also known as build it and they will come mentality). I am not messing i still see that mentality in some people.

 

I can identify with a couple of those mistakes.Don't just throw money at advertising-wrong ppc's will cause you to go broke!Start small.
Giving up too soon-kind of goes with spending ad money unwisely.Many programs are cutting checks weeks or months after sales/commissions.So budget accordingly.Stay with it.

Learn all you can.I know that sound simple,but there is SO much information out there.Read,read,read! Get to know your product/service-find the leaders and see what they do and how they advertise.Of course forums,blogs and reviews can give you some insight as well.Thanks for reading!

 

9. Wasting money on those get rich quick schemes or 1,000,000 visitors. Also, those "targeted traffic" pay sites.
(its all BS)
#2 mistake with people right after newbies, but still not quite knowing what theyr doing

(personal experience - its painful)

Nice list. Just want to add a little something, It is not easy but once you figure it out its better than punching a clock 9 to 5.

Do not focus on quality only concentrate quantity

 

This might fall under the "trying to do too much at once" category but how about: trying to implement every single piece of advice they receive even when those pieces are contradictory?

The hardest thing I've had to learn was that I cannot please everyone all of the time. One person will tell you that your website is too crowded and five seconds later someone else will say "what's with all the white space??"

I also think that too many people try to squash their personalities when they first start out in the name of being "professional."

~ Getting distracted and watching to much porn.
~ Spending to much time at Digital Point.
~ Trying to maintain to many sites - the 100 sites equals 100 times the income syndrome.
~ Spending to much time promoting your site & not enough time on your own site.
~ Not targeting long tail keywords & only chasing the one worders.
~ Spending to much time responding to this thread.

 

Good advice. I learned the hard way on the "targeted traffic" advertising scheme. If it sounds too good to be true.........

 

Most newbies don't have a "team"...they barely have themselves...and most don't know anything about banners, advertising, link building or marketing. They think that if they put a page together and slap adsense on it they'll get rich.

Ignorance and not doing their research is one of the biggest newbie pitfalls.

 

this are the really common mistakes that a newbie does.. too bad newbies are lazy to read.. they are more to listen but more important is what they must read

 

You've elaborated well on a point mentioned earlier, don't spend more than you can budget, and if outsourcing to ask for more than you can afford. If you're outsourcing, or have a team of marketing personnel, you need realize that they are your life blood, and if over worked and underpaid, they'll help you collapse your chances of having a successful business.

I think you last point is more true that it should be. Whether it's their fault, or the person selling something to them that claims it's so simple, they just have to flip a switch. Either way, traffic is one of the LARGEST hurdles most face online. TAKE THIS TO HEART: if you can get consistent traffic to your site/sites, you'll survive online.

 

DON"T EVER STOP LEARNING! One of the biggest assets you can have is to stay current on your industry. This isn't a get rich quick, easy money, scheme here online. You're venturing out into an industry where you should act as a professional. Learn, read, learn!
