I'm trying to find out which directories are the best. Paid or non paid don't matter. I want a short list which I can use for all my sites. I'm hoping to identify the top 5 directories.

    1. Yahoo
    2. Dmoz

After this I'm lost. Do you agree that these 2 are a "must" to use?

    Which others should I use?

Please give a list of the top 5 directories.

I wouldn't include DMOZ in any "best of" list for directories. The likelihood of your site being accepted is quite low...and it could be months or even years down the road if you are fortunate to actually get your site reviewed and approved. DMOZ is dead.

If you want a few old and respected free directories, try:
    http://www.webworldindex.com/
    http://www.worldsiteindex.com/
    http://www.abilogic.com/

But the higher-quality directories are paid directories. A very short list of old and respected paid directories:
    http://dir.yahoo.com/
    http://botw.org/
    http://www.joeant.com/
    http://www.goguides.org/
    http://www.wowdirectory.com/
http://www.elib.org/ (probably the oldest and best shopping directory)

I just want to have a short list of high quality tested directories. EveryQuery provided a nice list I think.

    Anyone else?

You need to check alexa ranking from it you can know this site back links.
If you will wait to Dmoz or Yahoo to give you link forget it
No directories list is the best many websites have high PR next update is lost
look deep befor you add your link

OK. Some various "feelings" about dmoz. Dmoz seems more or less corrupt in my eyes. Impossible to get valid sites listed sometimes...and at the same time some manage to get subpages listed. Very strange.

Anyone who have another list of 5 top directories?
