I have no affliation with Godaddy but wanted to pass along a tip for anyone who is interested. I used it today, so I know it works.

Godaddy is running a promotion that loweres doamins to $3.99 if you buy a non-domain product from them.

The lowest price non-domain product is "Traffic Facts" which runs $1.95.

    $3.99 Domain name
    $0.25 ICANN fee
    $1.95 Traffic Facts
Enter in "David" for the Promo Code which takes a $1.00 off.

    Total Domain price = $5.19

Since "Traffic Facts" is set up to auto-renew, you'll need to cancel the service or you will be charged $1.95 next month.

This blog gives a real good explanation of how to go about it.

I'm currently using maddogdomains, they have an OK control panel, 6,99 if I recall correctly. Does 1and1.com offer a complete back end (DNS settup etc?)

and with the high euro-dollar ratio, or low, from whatever side of the ocean you are looking at it, .COM's are very cheap for us here in europe :)

1&1 has been a hassle for people that want to sell or transfer away from them.

I've been transfering domains to 1and1 from GoBaddy(had a negative experience with them), and 1and1 wants documentation to transfer to them. So, I guess as jbw said, they probly want much documentation to transfer away.

In a way, I don't mind the extra security precautions, since it protects me and seems like real quality service for a regular low price.

    later,

    tom

People might find it crazy, but I keep all my domains with Tucows/Opensrs. It's $10 a domain, flat price. So far, no problems, ever. Over 6 years buying domains thru them. It indeed is a few extra bucks, and a lot when you have a couple hundred domains, running over couple of years. But, all said and done, I still find it worth. I am trouble free with OpenSRS. Anybody else a Tucows/OpenSRS fan out there ?
