I have a similar problem, I changed the content and .co.uk/bdkkljfd details that main domain stayed the same. But google keeps failing to crawl the old listings and does not seem to be able to find the new ones.

    1. What is a 404?
    2. Would a 404 on the old listings help the new?

    Thanks

What I would do is create a custom 404 page. Some people turn it into a small mini sales page, or collect email addresses etc. At a minimum, you should tell the reader that the page is no longer available or has moved to xyz. You can do this via your .htaccess file.

I suggest that you redirect the deleted pages to some other content. You front page. Search for "301 redirect + .htaccess" on google.

You can use Google Webmaster Tools to remove those URLs from Google index. And you can use robots.txt file to block SE bots from crawling those pages. This will hopefully solve your problem

You can put that info in your robots.txt file and the when the bots will crawl your website, they will know what pages to exclude from the search.
