40K is doable, but it would probably take a good dose of both vision and programming to to achieve on any profitable level.

It's also worth pointing out that there's a big difference between revenue and profit. I think there's an old business saying - "Income's for vanity, profit for sanity"

Agreed. people only tend to see gross numbers. Someone could do 40K per month and spend 37K on Adwords to get it.

hmm server expenses are pretty cheap. I pay less then 1k/month for my server expenses.

I probably have about 1k budgeted for advertising.

    I do 99% of server admin/programing myself.

Course adsense isnt my primary source of income but rather user subscriptions.

Indeed - I know of people can can reach near that figure, but they do have an awfully advanced set up and costs.

Also, this article may be of interest:
    http://www.threadwatch.org/node/3227

The gist of it - 250,000 domains registered per week for AdSense potential, with those deemed non-profitably returned under automated 5 day grace period.

    Automated, automated, automated...

any way it's so easy to reach that amount of money by building a good website and forgetting about making money for a while , it's better then spamming and scamming around ...

    i couldn't disagree more.

to make those kind of dollars you have to be constantly thinking and coming up with ways ... the formula you jsut mentioned won't make you that kind of money. that's a pipe dream unless you have extremely high traffic sites ... and again, you get that way from planning.

This is interesting discussion. I have found myself also moving towards more automated way of making and managing websites. I am now experimenting with things like postnuke and php rss feeds that can be used to setup a skeleton for a website and would make adding content a breeze. Gone are the days where you have to manually add content to your html websites that takes a lot of time. It is still alright to do it that way, but if your goal is to keep pumping out websites fast, than it is better to use dynamic pages.

Great point! That is where the big money makers are getting their high numbers. They are spending money to make it. I set out to make it, without spending a dime. So far, so good.

I totally disagree. I think most people making more then 10k a month have less then 1% overhead.

on my earnings ... i pay $25 a month for my reseller hosting account. oh yeah ... the $10-15 to register each of the 10 domains.

other than that .. i pay nothing.

but i could hire some hands to clone my process over and over again like a sweat shop.

    I spend USD 100.00, get USD 3,000.00

    So its about 3% overhead

Is this for adsense? There was a discussion earlier about using adwords to fuel adsense earnings and I believe that the most people could do is break even. Any tips on where to spend advertising dollars?

ok here is the big thing... the poeple that are making over 10k that I am refering to are not advertising anywhere... they just have huge well known sites.

Which is totally different to throwing together a made for adsense site.

I was surprised to see that a well known news site now has adsense on it, that site would have close to a million visitors a day......it would be interesting to see how many people click on the adsense ads on that site as people go there to check out the latest news......they are not looking for anything specific or looking to buy anything.

Incidently the adsense is just in one box on the side of the page which is how it should be, unobtrusive yet you still see it.

This is ideal...for a huge site, but most webmasters just can't afford to do that. Small-timers like myself need the highest CTR possible:)
