Google's long awaited desktop search has been released... You can download it here: http://desktop.google.com Looks good to me - I hope to hear some thoughts from Anthony on this one
It love it, my harddisk ( 120 gigabyte ) is a mess and I have to use the Windows search function quite a lot ... Google's Desktop Search app works much faster and in my favorite application, the browser. The only negative thing sofar is the short result list per page (10 - the default), I would like to change the number of results shown independant from the number of results shown for a websearch.
I have to say it's a killer tool, searching my hundreds of emails in outlook express is lightning fast! Only drawback is that it doesn't search the text data with other file extensions (e.g. php), or maybe because it hasn't indexed all files. I love it! Can't imagine how they could make it.
I got an .aspx file in one of my searches so .php shouldn't be a problem, it's probably not indexed yet like you mentioned. EDIT: the .aspx file came from my browser history so they might have to extend this to the local files yet.
Does anyone have issues with security / privacy with this? After all, how do we know that data is/is not being sent back to big G about what we have on our local pc?
Google can't risk to do stuff like that without people knowing about it, a scandal like that would finish the company pretty fast if you ask me. Google has an option to disallow anonymous statistics so if you uncheck this option there shouldn't be any info flowing back to G.
Well, I'm pretty sure Anthony will have his say on this... Personally - I unchecked the information about sharing data etc... I really don't much like the idea of G knowing what I have on my pc - least of all knowing what sites I run... I've gotta say though - this is going to save me a LOT of time...
a screenshot of the Indexing in progress: http://www.php9.com/index.php?p=23 also the first impressions in using it
For people using this now, has it affected your computer's performance at all? How does it index everything without being a bit of a drag on resources?
I'm glad you PC people finally have a way to search your computer that's fast and easy. It's about time you caught up.
SE, what do I think about it? I think it is another software program that is a data mining tool for the user and Google itself. It is the same song and dance we talked about 3 months or so ago when we first discussed it. Everyone including M$ will come out with advanced hard drive search software that will search across all file types. Google must develop products before M$ comes out with LONGBUG OS, I am all for it. Apple users, can you guy's use PUFFIN on your boxes or do you have your own HD search software? If anyone has fear of someone looking at the files on your HD, you can get a spyware free download of a hard drive search product that is great at the link below. www.diskmeta.com
I desperately need something like this, years ago I used to have a similar DOS application that did wonders for me. I downloaded it, but found it won't work with Windows 98. My machine can dual boot with Windows XP, but it seems I would have to boot into XP, and let it sit overnight to make sure everything is indexed.
For some reason it indexed everything EXCEPT the emails in Outlook Express. That was my biggest reason for wanting it
