    but it works in Firefox???

    So is there a local IE setting i am overlooking??

    http://www.mydomain.com/asdfasdf will load a 404 page which reloads to a certain folder
    <META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT="0; URL=/certain-folder/">

    in Firefox this works ok, but IE just shows a 404 page???

    Yes. IE ignores 404 pages that are less than something like 512 bytes and just serves its own 404 page. Make your 404 page a bit bigger and IE will behave.

    Redirects when a 404 is encountered are generally a bad idea. It's much better to serve whatever page is in your folder as the 404 itself. That way the URL stays the same for the visitor so if they only made a typo by one letter they can just fix it.
