404 Page Redirect

Would it be ok to redirect my 404 requests back to my homepage? Would any search engines possibly penalize me for this?

That is fine, but it would be a better idea to have a sitemap as a 404 custom page as it makes more sence.

Search engines do not spider 404 pages, as the moment they get a 404 server response they end the session.

Sure, you can do that. It might be a bit confusing for the visitor who hits the 404 page however.

Either a sitemap or a page showing the links that you want visitors to click on .

I made a custom 404 page using my home page as the template, but the 404 page is unique. It contains a friendly message indicating that the page requested does not exist alongside the standard site navigation.
