1) Don’t use unrelated keywords In one ad group, don’t place unrelated keywords together. Each ad group should have similar keywords. For example, ‘make money on eBay’ and ‘how to make money on eBay’. Don’t place ‘make money on eBay’ and ‘eBay business’ together. Rather, separate them into different ad groups. This gives you a better click through rate. 2) Use keyword tools You can use free tools or paid tools to help you find profitable keywords. Good free tools include Good Keywords and the one over at Digital Point. Paid tools like Keyword Elite and Adword Analyzer offer deeper options for more advanced marketers. It’s advisable to start off with the free tools and then ‘upgrade’ to the paid software once you are familiar with Adwords. 3) Use your keywords in your ad You’d want to use your keywords in your ad, not only because the searcher will find it more relevant to click on, but because it also bolds your keyword, making it more noticeable. This really helps in increasing click through rates. You will also achieve a better Quality Score, giving you a higher ad position and a lower cost per click. 4) Use a low daily budget Keep your daily budget low if you are just starting out. You don’t want to overspend and find yourself in the red too early on. Become familiar with Adwords first, and once you are comfortable and making a profit, increase your daily budget. Good advice. Also create targeted landing pages. The landing pages are the pages where the visitor is directed after clicking your add. These should be optimised for the keywords that you are targeting with the ad. Another tip is to start out with the search network only and get your feet wet. The content network can get your budget rising quickly with little return if you don't know what you are doing. Also stay ontop of your campaigns. You have to work on them weekly at least to ensure that your campaigns are getting the most for you.
Also, Over time.....try to weed out underperforming keywords from ad groups that have strong keywords.........the better your CTR the higher your ads will be placed. We have spent a lot of time moving and deleting non performers which has resulted in clean adgroups that get me higher on the page for less $
All good points, though I would suggest that you don't rely too much on the keyword suggestion tools. Also list all of your products with accurate adjectives, and use all combinations, in both singular and plural. Keyword suggestion tools will give you the keywords with the most clicks, which often isn't what you want... But they may come up with alternative names for things that you may have missed, so you should certainly use them (albeit carefully).
Here's a good one I use a lot -: Your clickthrough rate (CTR) goes up when the the search term/keyword is in your ad Adwords shows the searched kewyords in bold. You put the searched for keyword in your ad title by putting this string in the title field on the Adwords screen :- {Keyword: Default Title} where you replace 'Default Title' with your normal ad title. Adwords will now show the search term as the ad title if the searched term fits within the 25 character limit. E.G. If you were to use {Keyword: Cyprus Property} as the title and 'Cyprus property' as the keyword. If someone searches for 'Cyprus Villas', the displayed title will be 'Cyprus Villas'. However if the search is for 'Villas in Kapparis Cyprus' (26 characters), Google will show your default title, 'Cyrpus Property' because the search term won't fit in the title space. This can increase your CTR by as much as 10%. Increased CTR means you pay less for the kewyords than others with lower CTR.
