    Hi,

I saw an 4 letters domain name that I can register.

But it's an abbreviation of the 4 words that represent my website
so should I buy the the 4 letters domain name or buy one with the words in it ?

    thanks

    Depends I guess...

4 words is a LONG .com unless it's 4 VERY SHORT WORDS. ;)

Even so, I tend to prefer the "words" to the "letters."

Hard to say without knowing exactly what the 4 letters and 4 words are.
(Don't mention HERE!) until AFTER you make a decision.

    Go with your GUT FEELING.
    Good luck.

    why not take both?

the four letters could work but that would take more domain branding efforts in your seo efforts.

Is the 4 word domain name a keyword you want to target? If so, I would certainly register it as google still gives weight to the domain name.

As others suggested, for about $12 you can get both and just point them both to your site.

I'd also consider whether you want to be known by those 4 letters.

5 years ago when I bought pcpropertymanager.com we'd have rather had pcpm.com (then owned by the Palm Coast Perl Mongers) because the full domain is quite a mouthfull! However despite the fact that we refer to the product as pcpm we don't want our customers doing it.

short domains are handy for email. If it makes sense, I'd pick it up - but not for anything more than a reg. fee. I hate those people that try to resell three letter domains like d7g.com like they are something special.

My suggestion would be to register both and then have the long version redirect to the site (which is built on the 4-letter).

For SEO purposes, the keyword domain would be better.

that's what I meant. SEO is never the only thing to consider, there are plenty of other factors, and often they conflict.

Yes, but as I said, it depends on the goals of the site. Most of the sites I develop wont be marketed offline so brandability doesnt mean a great deal. To be remembered, you first have to be seen. By having that keyword rich domain hopefully your one step closer to gaining that exposure through free search engine traffic.

Register both - use the domain with keywords as your main domain, and 301 redirect the 4 character one. If you do offline advertising, use the 4 character for easy of rememberance.

Many factors indeed :) Some people actually have an easier time remembering and typing in the long url rather the 4 letter abbreviation. But the majority will enter wald.com rather than WhatALongDomainname.com
