3rd World Inflation Out of Control: Price of Rat Meat has Quadrupled in Cambodia

Inflation is out of control in the 3rd World. The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year and inflation is putting rat meat beyond the reach of poor people.

With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel (69 pence) from 1,200 riel last year.

Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.

New York City has over thirty million rats.

People complain that it's bad in the US but you don't see the rat population decreasing.

The price of oil has sent the price of all meat sky high. Until oil consumption is dropped to a point of its not needed; we are at the mercy of the oil companies both foreign and domestic.

I guess there is a big difference, Cambodia being an agricultural country, the rats are fattening up on grains etc. So their meat shouldn't be poisoned. I can't imagine what the stomach of a NYC rat contained. It would be dangerous for consumption.

I've always thought of rat as an everyday food where every family could afford to put a rat on the table.

What is the world coming to?

New York rats are well fed. They eat at KFC and taco bell.

Damn, I wish you hadn't said that. Now the Anti-Americans on this board will be blaming America for raising rat prices too!

Definitely it is the Americans fault, if only they had reared their own rats better, feed them healthier food, we may have another huge source of rat meat from NYC, look at the situation now! Millions of rats in NYC roaming about yet cannot be harvested!

If that's true, it's really alarming.

I guess we should all be thankful for what we have.

No thanks, I prefer a Big Mac anytime of the day. If you don't tell me what I am eating I guess I would be fine eating that, but no way if I know it is rat, yucks!

India has started a campaign to start eating rats. They have no shortage of them -- 10 billion rats live in India.
