Bing and Yahoo use same search result algo.
Google is different search engine having tough competition. Its not easy to rank in Google but also not Impossible.
18 backlink in Yahoo is not a big advantage, It depends also upon the quality of links.
Google show all links in Google webmaster tool but not in google.com (link:site.com).

I think this has been discussed to death on every IM forum around, but as you already know each search engine is an independent company with their own algorithms. Google tends to place the most value on off page factors. Also, in webmaster tools Google is explicit that they do not show all your links, only a small percentage.

18 backlinks is nothing, even for a long tail keyword that people aren't likely using as much on Google any more because of the instant search results.

It is harder to rank for keywords in Google. A lot of my keywords rank well in yahoo and bing, but not in Google, but I still have a lot of traffic from Google for other keywords. Just keep write articles and you will get traffic.

My new web sites always show up in Yahoo and Bing way sooner than Google, I just chalk it up to the sandbox.

have you submitted your sitemap to google webmasters tools already ? if you haven't I'd suggest doing so.
also, how many links come up when you do site:www.yourdomain.com in google ?

my pages get index almost immediatly in google ( 17 total) but webmaster tools says 0 back links. my suspicion was that it was harder to rank in google and takes longer, just wanted to clear it up

Absolutely normal. But I generally find my rankings the other way round. I get rankings in Google earlier than Yahoo or Bing (Both being the same search technology now)

If your website is new, it may take time to update backlinks in Google webmastertools. Yahoo shows nofollow links too as backlinks and so always show more number of backlinks. Google is not showing actual backlink count for the command link:

You need to create back links from high quality sites.

Also, only dofollow links will help you to get SEO benefits in Google. Nofollow links will not help your ranking in Google.

Try to get more contextual back links from article directories, guest post, blog reviews, etc to boost your ranking up.

Google's algorithm is different from Yahoo and Bing. Increase more quality backlinks with link building activities.

sounds like google is not indexing your page, try doing a quoted search of the actual URL. if nothing returns, you're not being indexed.
