Looking around the "top" output of my server I notice that I have around 20-30 mysqld processes running each with 20-38MB of ram usage.

Is this normal? It seems to be killing my server.

initially 20-30MB of RAM don't kill any machine because usual RAM now is 512MB which is enough for many sites but seems 40MB for 30 mysql processes are much though
