301... what happens after that?

I have a website that is only ranked at MSN. Not found on Yahoo or Google.

The domain is something like www.blue-widgets.com

Today I have been offered the domain www.bluewidgets.info

I don't really know what to do... if I get the domain and do a 301 redirect to it, what will happen? Current domain has PR4 and over 350k backlinks, will those move over to the new domain? How long will it take? Will the current rankings at MSN stick? Anyone that has done this before please jump in.

Why 301 it to the new domain? Are you banned in G or something?

No, but the new domain has my targeted keyword without the dash, it is very difficult to find this kind of domains

Cool. I was just trying to understand the reasoning. Personally, I would think a .com TLD would hold more juice than a .info, but that is just me. I have 301'd plenty of domains, but I have not paid attention to MSN rankings and how they were affected by doing something like this. Plus, it seems like G has changed something with their handling of 301s recently. There is a thread I started about this somewhere in the Google forum. I will have to find it. Nothing conclusive, but some strange things are going on with two of my sites.

    <edit>Here is the thread

Google refuses to let me climb up. I have been dropping up and down from #120 to #125 for my keyword, I am wondering if getting this new domain would help me make the jump

It's kind of funny how some sites just can't climb up. I can't get Toyoland to go past #120 for "toyota FAQ" though as far as I can tell it's the only site with a toyota FAQ.

I have done everything... huge coop weight pointed to it... loads of good backlinks... well seo'd page...

And it just won't climb up. Domain is almost one year old and not in the sandbox, so I just don't know what else to do. I wonder if the 2 year registration myth would work...

Well it seems to me that the $10-20 or whatever it will cost to register for the next 2 years would be worth it at least to try.

Is it perhaps that the keywords you are targeting are REALLY competitive..? Try related alternatives - I found that I couldn't rank well for "Keyphrase" but when I started shooting for "Something Keyword" then I started floating up the serps for "Keyword" also.

Anyways - thats not what you asked sorry - about the new domain - Would it be beneficial use the new domain to create a second site with some of your material and host the 2 sites on seperate class C IPs and link relevant keyterms across the domains...? (I'm asking not recommending)

I have seen this work tremendiously in the past - not sure if this is even a viable method any more

Well, I guess it would be easy to build a quick site with the other domain...

OK, now I've got some bargaining to do... hope the seller will go down on his asking price :D
