301 Redirects - How Do They Work?

I was wondering, if I had a domain name, and I wanted to change the domain to something else, and I put a 301 redirect on my old domain, would it transfer my SERPS for that domain to the new domain and replace my spot in Google with the new domain?

Or would it just completely move me off of Google?

Well I know how to do a 301 redirect :p I need to know if it will carry the value of my current domain to the new one as I cannot afford to lose my SERP's

Ya, no it won't necessarily include your new site in the search engine results page(s). You will have to get the new domain indexed by Google. It will not replace your spot or ranking, you will have to achieve that again with your new site. The 301 redirect might help with that though as some of your built up "link juice" will pass through to the new domain.
