301 redirects and Google

I have to rename 2 pages on my site and plan to do a 301 redirect. I have about 100 inbound links to the old URL.

I've heard that even with a 301 redirect, you may still have a significant drop in google when you rename pages? Has anyone else experienced a drop in Google ranking when using a 301 redirect?

I have seen both occure. If the pages are highly relevant it is most likely you will retain the ranking.

Google will cache the new page and you will get the benefit of all inbound link as per my knowledge

no it wouldn't, especially if you want to rename it because of adding your keywords there. Having some keywords in your URL is great idea but not too many otherwise it looks like a spam. .

I think 301 from old to new will tell the search engines to pass on all the link popularity to NEW!

301 is the best and only way for you to do when you need search engine bots to acknowledge about your pages url changed. I had experienced in both 301 on page to page and domain to domain.

    - 301 page to page should not give you a problem. Only a few days to have your pages acknowledged by Google

    - 301 domain to domain could give you a big hassle. It could take from weeks to months before things will be settle.

    I second Sxperm on that.
Page to Page progressive 301 redirects will work like a charm.
For domain redirect, it sometimes looks suspicious and you could get long delays indeed.
