so i have two websites . . . the end. okay so really I have two websites one is an abbreviation for the other one, that somehow some reason the owner didnt find a use for it anymore and let it expire. Well without knowing I purchased it and it came with a few backlinks and what not. But that is not the site that I want to run the website on, so I did a 301 redirect. I have articles written on the 301 redirect because I was just going to get both of them indexed in the search engine, well then I didnt want to do double the work forever so I chose which name I wanted to use and did a redirect. My Question - Should I leave the content on the one website or is it not serving a purpose and I should put it on the site I am using so I can gain benefit from it ? So I dont know if the search engine still read the content on a 301 redirect. Thanks for your help
If you are 301 redirecting http://exampleA.com/some-article.html to http://exampleB.com/some-other-article.html then http://exampleA.com/some-article.html should get deindexed once all of it's backlinks have been recrawled and the 301 discovered for each of those backlinks. The article at http://exampleA.com/some-article.html will no longer be accessible so it's not really serving any purpose living at it's old URL. At that point you could move http://exampleA.com/some-article.html over to exampleB.com and republish it there. Of course if others have copied that content you may no longer be flagged as the originator of the content once you move it. But even if you're no longer considered the originator, duplicate content can still outrank the original version of content with more backlinks.
Canonical is right, before you move the content or 301 redirect, verify that the content is your orginal content. By moving it, you will give the "orginal ownership" to the next in line and you will lose any benefit. Also, you will also set your self up for a duplicate content penalty.
but what if i have already had the 301 for like 4 months now, then wouldnt the next inline already have been given the "torch" also if i put the same content on to the my site being used and the 301 redirect still and always will point wont that hand the "torch" to the new site ?
