301 redirect versus 302

I have a couple of sites which use a 302 redirect to the index.html page. I am not sure why the web developers did this but with them having been there for 8 months the redirect can hardly be called temporary.

My question is, will changing the current 302s to 301s have a negative effect on the site, page or rankings?

    Thanks

If the redirect is not temporary then use 301 .

A 302 is temporary, 301 is permanent, although I have no idea whether a temp redirect expires. I would not like to find out the hard way.

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. You should swith over to it if you have no plan to change it always. Changing from 302 to 301 will not effect your SEO as per my exp.
    Thanks
