301 Redirect v Feeder Sites?

    Hi,

I thought I had posted this question already but could not find it. So maybe I was dreaming ! Apologies if it is a repeat.

I have a number of feeder websites to my main site. Let's say the main site is widgets.com

It ranks well, but I have created satelite or 'feeder' sites targetting specific keywords. So they might be for example stainlesssteelwidgets.com

OK, I could just put another page on my mainsite like this:
    widgets.com/stainlesssteelwidgets.htm

But the seperate url seems to rank realy well in Google. I have a few of these sites and they rank #1 for the main keyword with almost no SEO.

    So the big question.

Do I actually need to host these feeder sites, with there own single page content, or could I merely 301 redirect them to the main site (widgets.com) and get the same benefit in terms of traffic and SERPS ranking for the keywords? In this case stainlesssteelwidgets?

Have reseached a lot on here and other forums, but cannot really find an answer.

Any knowledge or experience you can share would be most appreciated.

For very low competition keywords the power of having the exact match domain will give you the push you're looking for to get that site ranked very well, but that ranking won't be very stable or long lasting if you 301 redirect. I've seen businesses with old, high PR websites do the opposite. They had CompanyName.com and CompanyName.com/ProductName.htm which was 301 redirected to ProductName.com which was in turn ranked #1 for that relatively competitive keyword. Interestingly enough, ProductName.com was ranked #1 with no other backlinks besides the 301 redirect from their powerful main website.

Interesting. So they really ceated their own mini link wheel? Guess you would have to make sure the two sites were on seperate servers? Thanks for the idea, I might try that.
