301 Redirect the robots.txt outside the root domain?

    Hi,

I do not have permissions to put files in the root directory
    ( i.e. http://www.mydomain.com/robots.txt )

But I do have permissions to setup 301 redirects. Can I 301 redirect http://www.mydomain.com/robots.txt to http://www.mydomain.com/folder/robots.txt

And still have it function normally?

    Thanks!

Why can't you access the root? You could try dropping the robots.txt into the sub-folder - e.g. http://www.mydomain.com/folder/robots.txt. Assuming the sub-folder is designed to act like a domain it should work fine.

I know it sounds weird, but this is the way the framework is set up.

Sounds like the sub-folders are set up to act like domains. Drop the robots.txt into the root of the sub-folder. That should do the job. Check it out with Google webmaster tools - https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/
