301 Redirect Question

Now I have converted my forums to vB, I have decided to also install vBadvanced to make life a bit easier with getting new content up on the site as well as wanting to better integrate the main part of the site with the forums. I have finalised getting all the legacy content from the main part of the site onto the CMS powered pages. I now want to do 301 redirects in my htaccess to permanently redirect the old pages to the new. From my understanding, the .htacess should look something like redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm and of course I repeat this for every page I want to redirect. My question is, is this the best solution? Also, if I make some edits to the new pages would this be ok? For a 301 redirect is the new page meant to be an exact mirror of the page being redirected from?
