301 Redirect lifetime

    Hi all,

Can anyone give me their opinions on how long old 301 redirect URLs should stick around in my .htaccess file? I would have removed some of the older ones, but I thought I remember reading a while back in the forums that some of the big searches don't seem to listen to the 301 and keep looking for that URL instead of the new one...

Plus Im always worried about old links that were published on other sites or in marketing material staying good...

    What say you?

    Thanks
    Goose

I would keep the redirects as long as possible, it doesn't hurt anyway. I think those major search engines should be aware of 301 redirects.

As long as there are obsolete links out there, SE's will keep requesting old pages. I have some of these about 2-3 years old.
