301 redirect - I've lost my Google rank!!

    Hey guys

I recently switched a website from a .me.uk domain to a .me domain and used a 301 redirect in the htaccess file because this apparently prevents you from losing your Google rank. However, even though the 301 redirect works fine and initially I still showed up on Google, I've now disappeared off Google!

Does anyone know what might have caused this, and how I can get my rank back?

The only reason I can think off is that I deleted all the old pages off my old server (on the .me.uk domain) even though the htaccess is still active - even with the pages deleted, if you visit one it still redirects fine to the new one?!

    I'm confused...

You have 301 redirected all the old pages to the new ones right?

If yes, then I think you need to wait and build some backlinks. Hopefully, you will get your ranking back in some time.

    Thanks for the reply

I did just one 301 redirect in the htaccess file for the whole domain. This redirects every page on the old domain to the corresponding page on the new domain. For example, if someone visits olddomain.com/hello.php they will automatically arrive at newdomain.com/hello.php

I have begun link building - hopefully this will get my rank back

No worries, if you have redirected all pages of your old website using 301.. then you just need to wait more ;)

Yep it is normal to experience a temporary drop in rankings after a 301 redirect. In time you should get your rankings back. In the meantime just keep building links and adding new content.

its normal to have a drop in page rank but once it finds out the redirect you should gain your pr back

It took about 6 weeks to get back reasonably in serps for some pages, after i changed domain with a 301, and 2 PR updates to get back to where i was before PR wise..... it just takes time and depends how often the big G does a deep crawl of all your pages.
