301 redirect from root domain to internal page?

    Hi all

I've encountered a site where the hompage root domain is performing a 301 redirect to a page within the site (ie their store frontpage). My gut feeling would be that this isn't advisable so i'd like to hear people's opinions on pro's and cons relating to this tactic. Particulary, will any links built on the root domain pass link authority through the 301? i've heard it will but have never seen conclusive evidence.

The 301 will pass PR but IMO its not a very user friendly way of doing it.

Why not just have the front page as www.site.com like 99% of other sites? It makes for a much better user experience.
